the displayed part of the river spree is mainly within the boroughs treptow, friedrichshain, and kreuzberg, which may be defined as the south-east of berlin. this area is outstandingly suited for constructional enhancements based on a pop approach. The transition from city to periphery is clearly visible. friedrichshain and kreuzberg are characterized by urban innercity buildings with numerous backkyards that were built in wilhelminian style, which is typical for berlin.

the adjacent area to the Plänterwald is identified by broad traffic aisles and a heterogeneous housing structure. industrial areas are right next to allotment gardens in the forest. the borough contains vast local recreation expanses, and it is bordering the neighbourhoods around the oberbaum bridge, which are renown for their vibrant music and youth culture scenes. the spacious natural areas such as the Plänterwald are providing a feeling of immersion within the periphery. however, they are cut by non-accessible industrial parks.

there are not many points of reference in that area so that one constantly has the feeling of being lost. there are barely any entities that identify it, which may also be seen in the fact that only few berliners are aware of the location.

currently, the river spree is solely used by merchant vessels, more or less touristy river cruses, and a few private boat owners. the vantages of the waterway are barely utilized, and therefore provide a considerable potential for development.
